Jizo Bosatsu is widely revered across Japan as the protector of travelers, women, and children. Shrines to him are often decorated with clothing, especially that of deceased children. He is said to travel to any realm, even the depths of hell, to rescue lost souls. There is even a specific Jizo whose job it is to protect stillborn, miscarried, or dead children. Gifts for those children are often left in his care.
